Factory oil pump gears are a weak point of Nissan VQ and QR engines. Poor design and material quality often leads to these gears failing, Thus resulting in total engine failure. Billet oil pump gears are a must have upgrade. Especially for high revving applications. Superior in design as well as material quality.
There is no comparison between billet steel and powdered steel used in OEM oil pumps. OEM oil pumps use a "cost efficient technique" called sintering because its cheap and produces tighter tolerances then casting. However powdered steel is even weaker then castings at only about 6000 PSI of strength. Good billet steels approach 110,000 PSI in yield strength or around 15 times stronger then OEM sintered steel.
